Coordinating Council provides feedback, affirms 2012 Task Force report

ATLANTA – At the February meeting of the CBF Coordinating Council, members affirmed a report from the 2012 Task Force, which was appointed in 2010 to move the conversation forward on restructuring the larger Cooperative Baptist Fellowship community.

Council members, partner and state/regional CBF leadership and former moderators received the report prior to the meeting, listened to a presentation from the Task Force and then met in small groups to discuss and offer feedback. On Friday, the Task Force presented to the Coordinating Council “Continuing Work Areas” as a response to the feedback. The report and “Continuing Work Areas” are available online at

“We came with recommendations, which were the result of a lot of hard work, but we wanted your input as we move forward,” said David Hull, chair of the Task Force and pastor of First Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala. “We heard a strong sense of affirmation, and we appreciate that. And we heard questions and concerns, and we appreciate that as well. We realize we still have work to do, and we appreciate your help in pointing out where that needs to happen.”

The Task Force will give continued attention on the work areas listed and then provide a revised report to Council members on April 15. Council members will vote on the updated report on May 1. The final plan will be made available for public consideration no later than 30 days prior to the General Assembly, which will receive, discuss and vote on the report. The 2012 General Assembly is planned June 20-23 in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Also during the Council meeting, CBF Executive Coordinator Daniel Vestal reflected on his ever-changing role with the organization and on the Fellowship’s vision statement, mission statement and core values.

“I have had to reinvent myself about five times in this role,” Vestal said. “I’ve been here 15 years, but I’ve had about five jobs. It’s been sort of a roller coaster. I have had to change my role because the organization has changed, and there have been different expectations of me along the way. As we discern the changes being recommended to us by the Task Force, I want us to keep [our mission, vision and values] in front of us. Our task is to organize ourselves in ways that will help us more faithfully live out our mission, live out our vision and be true to our core values.”

The Council received reports on the following:
• The finance committee submitted a $12.4 million budget for 2012-2013 fiscal year, which was approved by the Council. The committee also presented a motion to develop and implement a conflict of interest questionnaire, which would be signed annually by staff and Council members. This motion was approved by the Council.
• Larry Hurst, the Fellowship’s controller, reported that as of Jan. 31, the Fellowship’s revenues were at $4.32 million, 99 percent of the projected amount and expenditures were at $3.96 million, 90 percent of projections.
• The Council approved a motion from the Council’s officers to hire an interim executive coordinator. With input from the Council’s Personnel Committee, the officers will move forward in selecting a candidate, who will begin no later than July 1, 2012.
• Moderator Colleen Burroughs, vice president of Birmingham-based Passport Inc., and moderator-elect Keith Herron, senior pastor of Holmeswood Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo., have been invited to attend a gathering of goodwill Baptists March 7 at the White House. As part of the Fellowship’s partnership with the Baptist Center for Ethics and D.C. Baptist Convention, Burroughs and Herron and other Baptists will dialogue with White House officials about issues relating to Baptists.
• Jack Glasgow, past-moderator and senior pastor of Zebulon Baptist Church, Zebulon, N.C., provide an update from the Executive Coordinator Search Committee. The committee met in Dallas in January and will meet next in April in Atlanta.

“We didn’t feel any pressure to work too quickly, so we let the religious calendar set our agenda,” Glasgow said. “We decided to let the Lenten season be a time when we call ourselves and the whole Fellowship community to a time of prayer. And we mean that sincerely. We thank you for your confidence in us and ask that you are in prayer for us as we seek to find the leader that God has called.”

The next meeting of the CBF Coordinating will be held June 20 in Fort Worth, Texas, prior to the 2012 CBF General Assembly.
