Training Programs in Spiritual Direction

Follow the links below to learn more about training programs in spiritual direction.

  • Shalem - Shalem's roots go back to 1973, when Tilden Edwards — an Episcopal priest and head of an ecumenical center located in Washington, DC—began meeting with a group of people who desired, as he did, to deepen their relationship with God through contemplative awareness.  Shalem became an independent organization in 1979 and began to offer retreats and workshop as well as a long-term program for spiritual directors.
  • Stillpoint - Stillpoint was begun as a resource and mentor program for emerging spiritual directors. The core of the program, therefore, is the series of year-long courses in spirituality and contemplative prayer intended to support this ministry. These courses are not limited to persons already engaged in the ministry of spiritual direction, but are also open to those who find themselves moving toward such ministry or who desire to deepen their own spiritual formation.
  • Sursum Corda - is a not-for-profit formation program for spiritual directors that is ecumencial and grounded in the Christian contemplative tradition.  It is sacramental in nature and centered in the Eucharist to foster personal transformatino in those called to the ministry of spiritual direction.
