September 1-8

“...just like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel" (Jeremiah 18:6).

Excerpt from Prayers of the People, a free yearlong guide to prayer for CBF missions and ministries. Order the Prayers of the People prayer calendar as a way of remembering CBF missions and ministries throughout the year.
Approximately 80 percent of the people of Edgewood, a neighborhood two miles east of downtown Atlanta, are not actively involved in church. Carrie and Nathan Dean have been working for nearly a year to build relationships and trust with organizations and individuals in Edgewood in order to start a church. This month, they begin monthly worship services. Please pray that the development of grassroots, local support and interest in Edgewood Church will continue to expand. Pray also that the Deans' leadership will be marked by courage, wisdom, and attentiveness to God's direction. Visit www.edgewoodchurchatlanta.org to learn more about this ministry.

Prayer Requests from the CBF family

Butch and Nell Green, work with internationals, North America
  • Ask God to help Butch and Nell settle quickly in their new location of Montreal, Canada, in order to begin the work there.
  • Butch and Nell will be visiting churches that are part of the French Baptist Union. Pray that these visits will lead to relationships that will develop into effective working partnerships.
  • Butch and Nell will be attending the French Baptist Union’s pastoral retreat. Ask God to help them learn quickly Canadian culture and the workings of the union in order to facilitate the work and to build strong relationships with those they will be ministering alongside.

Joel and Tiffne Whitley, work with immigrants, Spain

  • Please pray for Christians in America and all over the world; that we will be living sacrifices in our prayers, giving and going to the unreached places and people in our world. Pray that we will remember the billions of people in our world who have never had the opportunity to hear about Jesus.
  • Please pray for our children’s school situation while in the states. The boys will be in the Dual Language Class to prepare them for the return to Spain. Megan has been accepted into this program as well, and her teacher is a former missionary to Spain who has children who attended school in Spain. It is amazing how God has provided a situation and teacher for our children who will understand their situation so well. God continues to answer prayers for the children’s education.
  • Thank you for praying for our family's transition to our time here in the United States.  Please continue to pray for us this month as Joel leaves for training.
  • Please continue to pray for Segunda and her five children.

Frank and Karen Morrow, work among refugees, Texas

  • Pray for our daughters—Sarah as she begins graduate school, Emily as she returns from a semester abroad to the university and Laurel as she begins her university studies. Pray for a good transition, friends and involvement in a Christian fellowship and community.
  • Pray for a group of 15 seminary students reaching out to the Buddhist Bhutanese refugees. Several refugees have asked for Bibles and are in discussion of the Christian faith.
  • Continue to pray for those involved in ministry to the Karen here as they seek to find a Karen-speaking pastor. Thank God for a very diverse group working together to help facilitate this.
  • Thank God for contacts He has provided us with ministry partners among refugees and the building of good relationships. Pray for wisdom as we seek to learn of the needs and build networks. Thank God for openness to establish a network locally of those working with refugees.
  • Continue to pray for our new Kurdish and Iraqi refugee friends. Pray that they will see Christ in us and others who minister in the refugee community.

Kim and Marc Wyatt, ministers to refugees, immigrants, and international students, Canada

  • Praise God for successful short-term trips this summer.
  • Celebrate with us as the 6th Matthew House opens its doors on September 13, 2010. God is so good! We stand amazed as He works among his people to open this new 5 bedroom house to welcome newly arrived refugees in the Ottawa area. Pray with us as the first refugee family is welcomed into this home. Pray too for the host family that will be living in the home. Canadians, Darcie and Keith Dow along with their children: Isaiah, 3 and Lucy, 1½ will be calling Matthew House home as they provide stability to the home with their presence. Pray that they will be able to juggle family time with Matthew House responsibilities.
  • Pray for the Britannia Baptist Church as they are about to celebrate their first year as a church. Pray for the continuing number of refugee families many of whom speak French as a first language that are joining this community of faith. Pray for the pastoral and leadership team, none of whom are financially compensated, as they continue to work out the need for Christian education of children and adults as well as encouraging and mentoring leaders. Pray that other churches in the area will partner and cooperate with this church as it develops its mission.
  • Pray for the pastor’s family of Britannia Baptist. In August, the pastor’s wife and child were involved in an accident that ended up in one fatality. Pray for the family of the 53-year-old man that was killed as well as for the pastor’s family as they grieve this tragedy.
  • Please continue to pray for Jackie and her family. Pray, pray, pray that even this month that all the paperwork needed from many government entities will arrive so that Jackie’s husband can be invited to come to Canada. Pray for Jackie for wisdom and perseverance as she continues to parent her five children alone.
  • Many international students have just arrived on campuses across North America. Pray for the desire to invite an international student to dinner in your home.

Janée Angel, ministry to Arabs, Brussels, Belgium

  • Pray for the last weeks of Ramadan and our Muslim friends who are earnestly seeking to find the true God.
  • Pray for English ministries that will begin again in September. Pray that they will not only serve a very practical purpose, but also be a tool to build relationships in our community.
  • Pray for our Student.Go worker, Lauren, who will come September 6th. Pray that she will find her place in life, learning and ministry here in Belgium. She will be teaching English and helping with the Arab church in her 3 months with us.
  • Janée and her husband Hary are expecting their first child, a baby girl. Pray for the last 3 months of Janée’s pregnancy. Pray for health for both mother and daughter. The baby is due on November 17th.

_____________, Unreached People Group, Southeast Asia

  • NT, our first friend in this people group, has said that he wants a "New Life" in Christ. He wants to discuss the matter more with his relatives before taking this step of faith. Please pray for his wisdom and protection during this process!
  • Our friend B is now cancer free! She and her sister asked that we thank all the people who were praying for her. Please continue to pray for B and her family—that they would come to learn how much the God who healed B loves them and desires to have a personal relationship with them!
  • Pray for efforts to establish early childhood learning centers in two villages—that the gossip and backbiting that has become so much a part of village life would not derail this effort to give the kids a great head start.
  • The books of Daniel, Philemon, 1 & 2 Timothy, and 1, 2 & 3 John are almost ready for the final quality control checks—pray that the checking will go well, and that the Word in the mother tongue would impact hearts!
  • Pray for our wisdom as parents, balancing work, ministry, and three wonderful kids!

Anna and LaCount Anderson, ministry to homeless persons, Scotland Neck, NC

  • Last week was particularly difficult for LaCount in his work at Union Mission. For 18 months he has been working with two men who have made wonderful progress in getting their lives back together. Both of these men had to be asked to leave the shelter and are now on the street. This was particularly painful for LaCount because of the strong relationships he has developed with the two men. Both men are capable of taking care of themselves but the fear is that they will lapse into the old habits which landed them in the shelter at the beginning. Pray that they will stay connected to the churches they have been attending and that God will use this event to strengthen them. Pray for direction in their lives.
  • Over the past few months we have been asked by many people about the idea of providing transitional housing for homeless women and children in different communities in northeastern NC. A house would be available for a family that is struggling, and counseling and support would be provided to the residents of the house for a defined period of time. We believe that this is of God since there have been several who have inquired from different communities. We ask you to pray that God will give us all wisdom as we seek to provide the kind of assistance to those who are in need of transitional housing.
  • We are very excited about the monthly food distribution to residents of Halifax and Northampton counties. We are in a period of time that food donations are low and we are praying for God to provide more food for the September 24 food distribution. We are also open to assisting other northeastern NC counties in need of food to distribute. Normally people are compelled to give food to shelters at Thanksgiving, and that is greatly appreciated, but there are immediate needs for families during September and October.

Persian World Outreach

  • Pray for the Christians in Iran who are suffering persecution. According to the reports received by the Farsi Christian News Network (FCNN), in recent months the security forces in the city of Tabriz, which is the largest city in the Northwestern Iran and the 4th most populous city in the whole country, have renewed and increased their pressures on new Christians by search and seizures of their homes, court summons, and other intimidating tactics.
  • Iranian Christians ask for prayer: Please pray for E’s bladder malfunction to be healed and that God strengthens her body and soul. Please pray for F whose gallbladder burst and had to have surgery. These two Iranian women are strong witnesses to the Persian community.
  • Pray for those Christians reaching out to Persian-speakers. Pray for those Christian Iranians in the US that are reaching out with the gospel of Jesus Christ to Persian-speakers here in the US and overseas.
  • Pray for Persian Christian Programming being broadcast by satellite & internet to Afghans and Iranians around the world. Pray for A and his wife, an Iranian couple in Malaysian who have accepted the Lord and are growing in their faith. Pray for them and for Iranians in Iran, Europe, Singapore, Canada and the US who listen and respond to the Persian worship service being broadcast from the Afghan & Iranian Christian Fellowship each Sunday at 12:30 pm at www.ustream.tv/channel/pwo .
  • Praise the Lord for the recently released “Life Application Study Bible” in Persian- a wonderful new resource for the Persian Church.
