ATLANTA – William L. Self, senior pastor of Johns Creek Baptist Church in Alpharetta, Ga., returns as the featured speaker on the first Sunday in Advent, Nov. 28, on "Day 1," the nationally broadcast award-winning television and radio program.
Johns Creek Baptist Church is affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a worldwide organization with a theological perspective that will be familiar to "Day 1" listeners.
Self’s sermon is titled "The Waiting Place" and is based on the first five verses of the second chapter of Isaiah. "We need Advent to make ourselves ready for Jesus’ coming," Self says. "We need Advent, the season of waiting, in a world that says ‘go for it’ and ‘hurry up.’ This waiting place called Advent not only prepares us for the birth of God in the flesh, it prepares each of us in our lives to receive him."
Self, who was pastor of Wieuca Road Baptist Church in Atlanta for 26 years, is a graduate of Stetson University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned a doctorate in sacred theology from Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta, has authored eight books and served as president of the Georgia Baptist Convention. In 1997 McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University, Atlanta, established a lectureship in preaching in his honor.
Formerly known as "The Protestant Hour," "Day 1" has been broadcast every week for more than 59 years, winning numerous awards in the process, including the George Foster Peabody Award and the 2003 Communicator Award for excellence in inspirational radio. Produced by the Episcopal Media Center, it features preachers from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the United Methodist Church, and the United Church of Christ.
A television version of "Day 1" also is broadcast Sunday mornings on the Hallmark Channel’s "America at Worship" series.
The executive producer for "Day 1," Peter Wallace, will consult with churches that want to have the radio program broadcast in their community. For more information, call toll free (888) 411-Day-1 or check the program’s Web site, www.Day1.net.
