Commissioned: 2005

The Whisnands began their service with CBF in Los Angeles, CA, as ministers to the migratory Hispanic population. In 2006 they relocated to El Paso, TX, then to Seattle in 2008. What do these cities have in common? They each have at least one horse racetrack, and the Whisnands serve as Chaplains to those who live and work with the horses on the backside, offering a spiritual presence among grooms, trainers, jockeys and other racetrack personnel. The large majority of those living at racetracks are Hispanic and live a migratory life.

Racetrack ministry is a natural atmosphere for Philip, who is a veterinarian, and who was raised on a ranch. As he and Diann minister along the track's backside, they are able to be the presence of Christ in a tough place. At one Spanish worship service, a worker interrupted the sermon to question the topic of grace and forgiveness. "He pointed out people in the room who had been unkind to him, and asked why he should forgive them," Diann said. "The answer given to him was that Jesus told us to look at our own hearts first before blaming others. He agreed that this was a good idea; he might try it. Hopefully all those living on the backside will try it."
