Karen serves in a area hit by the 2010 earthquake in Southeast Asia. The earthquake wiped out many of the villages along the coastal regions, and the communities have been working on rebuild. With no doctors in the immediate area, Karen uses her nurse practioner skills to treat patients. She is also working to build a medical program by training local and national healthcare workers and helping to coordinate medical program being led by both governement and non-government organizations. In addition, Karen partners with local organizations engaged in community development, such teaching farming, providing education.
